Responsibilities

Conceptual design | 3D modelling | Renders and presentation

GASS Architects received an invitation from Curbed, an American digital online publication, to envision and design a proposal for a new building located in the heart of Johannesburg's CBD. In this project, I served as the lead designer in collaboration with a colleague. My responsibilities encompassed conducting physical surveys of the existing structures, nurturing concept development, creating 3D models, and producing renderings for presentation.

Our primary challenge was to devise a proposal that would not only enhance the quality of life for the neighbourhood's residents but also cater to the needs of property developers.

The proposal centred around three buildings and an intervening vacant site. This envisioned complex integrated a school, office spaces, apartments, and retail establishments, all situated above a spacious public plaza. The tiered design of the project introduced much-needed green outdoor areas amidst the urban landscape. At its core, the building featured an art school with exhibition spaces seamlessly integrated into the facade design. On the ground level, mixed retail spaces activated the street edges, while the plaza promoted pedestrian flow and served as an inviting informal community gathering spot, particularly during lunch hours.
